If I may be so bold as to offer a translation, I believe that "Same old rubbish, but it don't cost much." would preserve the meaning, the spirit, and the ambiguity ( in Spartan tradition).
Actually, I will resort to my legendary 'translation guessing' skills, honed those many years ago, hung over in Mr. Dorfman's class.
